HELICS (Hospitals in Europe Link for Infection Control through Surveillance)

HELICS is an international network aiming at the collection, analysis and dissemination of valid data on the risks of nosocomial infections in European hospitals. This project will provide new insights on prevention and management of hospital infection in the era of increased of susceptible patients (increasing number of elderly and also of immuno-compromised patients) and in the era of emerging infectious diseases related to new agents, to anti-microbial resistance bacteria, to increased social mobility and exchanges of population, and increased use of invasive techniques (i.e. endoscopic surgery, interventionnal radiology). Appropriate guidelines from this project will be able to reduce the incidence of hospital infections and will provide methods for dealing with future issues. It will provide an excellent mean to develop European trans-national collaboration and will help for experience sharing and stimulate juniors physicians and health care providers to be involve in this new field of medicine.

Implementation of an MRSA protocol for hospitals in border areas - Border Region

This project is included in the INTERREG III project "Cross border Health Care in the Euregion of Meuse Rhine". Mobility of patients and doctors increase the risk o expoting antibiotic-resistance of pathogenic micro-organisms such as MRSA. This project aims at making the inventory of the vaious MRSA-protocols used in the hospitals at the different borders of the Euregion and understanding how they are applied in the case of cross-border care. A unique protocol for the region may be developped in the future.

Invasive bacterial infection surveillance in the European Union

Project Objectives: - to improve the epidemiological information on invasive meningococcal and Haemophilus influenzae disease within the European Union. - to improve the laboratory capacity to accurately characterise the isolates of H. influenzae, Neisseria meningitidis, and Streptococcal pneumoniae. - to evaluate the impact of vaccination with conjugate vaccines on the epidemiology of H. influenzae and N. meningitidis. - to compare the impact of vaccination with conjugate vaccines produced by different manufacturers and according to different schedules. - to form a focus for wider collaboration with non European Union countries and candidate European Union countries. IZOM "Integretie Zorg Op Maat", model experiment of cross-border health care - Border Region

The project is included in the Interreg III project "Cross border Health Care in the Euregion Meuse Rhine". The co-operating insurers have developed IZOM to facilitate the patients' access to mobile health care services. It follows the EU regulations and the E112 form but the procedure is simplified. The national authorities in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands have approved. Evaluation of the IZOM project shows that thousands of patients in the EMR use this facility. Financial and budgetary issues will also be evaluated.
