Creation and operation of a Surveillance Community Network for vaccine preventable diseases

This initiative contributes to continue the creation and operation of a surveillance network for vaccine-preventable diseases (EUVAC-NET) beginning with measles, pertussis and ruella incidence and vaccination coverage. Established databases should deliver reliable data for: 1. monitoring and comparing epidemiology and vaccination programs for appropriate vaccination campaigns and to compare the effects of different vaccination strategies used in different countries and also, for example, to carry out cost-benefit calculations. 2. monitoring the burden of the diseases from valid data as vaccination changes the epidemiological pattern of the diseases. Most essential are valid data on complications, fatalities and sequelae in measles patients. 3. outbreak warning of vaccine preventable diseases, and especially concerning measles, is beneficial for the individual participating countries as well as for the Community as a whole. The regular collaboration of data in the network will increase the possibility of detecting international epidemics and outbreaks in the EU and appropriate remedial actions can then be efficiently targeted, and any over dramatising of the situation avoided.
